Frequently Asked Questions

LegalMente AI is an AI-powered contract review software that uses cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology to review legal contracts and generate suggestions and help in determining if clauses are standard.  We are dedicated to help lower legal fees by making reviews faster, more accurate and helping educate clients.

No, LegalMente AI currently focuses on healthcare industry, specifically business associate agreements.  Stay tuned as we add support to review additional contract types and industries.

Unlike other contract review software, LegalMente AI believes that contract review is not one-size-fits-all.  Our review focuses on certain types of contracts in certain industry.  Just like you would not hire a criminal lawyer to do your patent legal work, you deserve software that uses AI models trained in your industry.

AI contract review and analysis software uses natural language processing (“NLP”) and large language models (“LLM”) to analyze contracts. NLP is the branch of AI that deals with human language, and LLC is the branch of AI that uses deep learning to understand, summarize, generate, and predict text content.  The technology, among other things, allows LegalMente to read language that it has never seen before. The ability to read novel language is critical in contracts, as most agreements have unique phrasing.

From start to finish takes minutes.  You sign up, load your PDF or Word document that you wish to be reviewed, and within minutes, you will receive your document with our comments.

No.  LegalMente simply provides education on the meaning and significance of various clauses in an agreement.  This helps non-lawyers in knowing what is in their contract before sending to an attorney or signing.  It can also be used to confirm that the attorney properly reviewed the agreement.

No.  LegalMente is designed to aid both non-lawyers or attorneys to make the review of a contract more quick and efficient.  LegalMente advises all of its customers to seek the advice of legal counsel before executing an agreement.  It is important to keep humans in the loop of any contract review process.

With LegalMente, contract owners and attorneys can focus more on the business aspects of a contract, rather than on the minutiae.

LegalMente does not provide legal advice.  Instead, it educates you on the most important clauses and may provide information on what many lawyers could suggest.  LegalMente’s output should always be reviewed by an attorney.  It is not designed to replace human judgment.  It is a tool designed to help non-lawyers be more educated about contracts they sign and to help lawyers work more efficiently and accurately.

With that said, AI can make mistakes given the wide variety of ways to express the same concepts with language.  If you believe LegalMente makes a mistake in its review, please let us know.

You want bias. All contracts have a bias as to whether is protects one party versus another party.  The purpose of a contract is to be a meeting of the minds.  However, when one lacks education or experience, one often neglects to negotiate additional biases that favors you.  Or due to lack of time or diligence, one may forget to include language biased in your favor.  In either case, LegalMente helps level the playing field to give an agreement the biases that you need.

Our pricing is located here.  We have priced our service as a fraction of the cost of an attorney to provide similar education.  Our goal is to help make legal services more efficient and accessible through lower pricing.

We focus on helping the clients of attorneys, not just the attorneys.  We desire to help lower the cost of legal services, not only to shift expenses to different players in the industry.  Further, LegalMente’s AI models are specialized by industry and contract type, not one algorithm to be used on all contracts.

Currently, LegalMente is designed to review the most common type of healthcare contract called the Business Associate Agreement.  Next, we plan to review non-disclosure agreements.  Our goal is to review all types of healthcare contracts and then move on to different industries, sector by sector.  Let us know if there are certain industries and/or contract types that you want LegalMente to be able to review next!

LegalMente was founded by a lawyer and a data scientist who both work in healthcare.  The software was built to help everyone in the industry, but the following are the easiest use cases:

  • You do not have time to read BAAs carefully
  • You do not have experience in reviewing BAAs
  • You have time and experience, but you wish to spend less time on the mundane aspects of contract review
  • You want to double-check your review
  • You want to know “can I sign this or not?”
  • The other party insists on using their template
  • You want to check on how to understand or improve your template
  • You want to review changes made to your template by the other party

No. Given the ubiquity of the Business Associate Agreement (“BAA”) in healthcare, many assume that it is a boilerplate agreement (i.e., a standardized agreement with the same terms every time).  That is a dangerous way to think!

BAAs can differ significantly in their terms and vary widely in the amount of liabilities and risks incurred by one party or another.  It is important to carefully review any BAA that one is asked to sign.

Yes, when appropriate.  Since contract clauses may be different to shift risk from one party to another, then the suggestions are based upon one’s position in the negotiation.

No. LegalMente does not replace humans who should be the ones actually revising an agreement.  To revise an agreement is to provide legal advice and one should always consult with an attorney or decide on their own whether or not attorney legal advice is needed.

Further, given the limits of artificial intelligence today, such automatic revisions of a contract without human intervention offers more problems than benefits.

Not yet, but stay tuned.  While the AI models are designed for English language contracts, we are in the process of developing the output in other languages, starting with Spanish. Thus, customers will be able to use LegalMente when having to negotiate English contracts and receive its suggestions in their native language.  Let us know if you need this soon and in what language(s).
